Sumo Squat (Dumbbell)

Dumbbell sumo squat is a variation of the traditional squat that specifically targets the inner thighs, glutes, and quadriceps. It is similar to the barbell sumo squat but uses a dumbbell as resistance.

  1. Stand with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart, toes pointing outwards at about a 45-degree angle. This wider stance is akin to a sumo wrestler's, which is where the exercise gets its name.

  2. Hold a dumbbell with both hands vertically in front of you. Your arms should be straight, allowing the dumbbell to hang down. The weight should be aligned with your body's center.

  3. Begin the squat by pushing your hips back and bending your knees, ensuring they track in line with your toes. Keep your chest lifted and back straight to maintain a neutral spine position.

  4. Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor or as low as your flexibility allows without compromising your form.

  5. Push through your heels to return to the starting position. As you stand, focus on engaging your glutes and inner thighs.
