Preparation: Versatile Training and Arrival The preparation for the Abu Dhabi Spartan World Championship 2023 was a journey in itself. My training included a mix of running, strength, and functional training—a diverse combination that prepared me for the upcoming challenges. Two days before the race, I arrived in Abu Dhabi to acclimatize. The locals were incredibly accommodating and friendly, which facilitated the adjustment. The event itself was well organized and took place amidst the impressive landscape of the Al Wathba Desert. Even the drive there was an experience on its own! The Race: A Mix of Challenge and Beauty On schedule at 8:30 AM, I started my race in the 35-39 age group. The day began with a comfortable 22 degrees Celsius, but I knew that the heat would soon become an additional challenge. Unexpected Difficulties Unfortunately, I lost my gaiters early in the race, which led to my shoes quickly filling with sand. Every step became agony as the sand in my shoes rubbed against my feet. Despite the pain and the mental challenge of "suppressing" it, I clenched my teeth and fought my way to the finish line. The Obstacles and Rising Temperatures The obstacles were made even more challenging by the sand—for example, one kept pushing more sand ahead while doing the Plate Drag. With the rapidly rising temperatures, the effort required also increased. Overall Impression and Experience Despite the challenges, it was a beautiful experience supported by an overwhelming atmosphere. Even though I did not achieve my set goals regarding placement and time, it was still an unforgettable experience. The good organization of the event also contributed to a positive experience.
