Sumo Squat (Barbell)

Barbell sumo squat is a variation of the traditional squat that targets the inner thighs, glutes, and quadriceps. It differs from the standard squat in the stance and positioning of the feet.

  1. Begin by standing with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outwards. This stance is wider than a traditional squat and resembles a sumo wrestler's stance, hence the name.

  2. Place a barbell across your upper back, not your neck, holding it with both hands. Make sure your grip is comfortable and secure.

  3. Initiate the movement by pushing your hips back and bending your knees. Keep your back straight and chest up to maintain a neutral spine. Ensure your knees are aligned with your toes and don't collapse inwards.

  4. Lower your body until your thighs are at least parallel to the ground. You can go deeper if your mobility allows.

  5. Drive through your heels to return to the starting position. Engage your glutes and inner thighs as you stand up.
